What “workday ready” means here

A connected browser showing Presence over Wi-Fi for at least nine hours at moderate brightness. Presence now requests a Screen Wake Lock on compatible Android browsers and restores it after the display returns to the foreground. Battery Saver, older browsers, managed-device policies, battery age, brightness, Wi-Fi strength, and background apps still matter, so test any device for a full day before installing a permanent mount.

01Lowest-cost pick

Amazon Fire HD 8 (2024)

PRICE CHECK$99.99DISPLAY8-inch color displayBATTERYUp to 13 hours claimed

Why it works

  • Compact enough for a narrow door frame
  • Long enough battery target for a normal workday
  • Widely available and easy to replace

Know before you buy: Fire OS uses the Silk browser. It works, but kiosk-style setup and hiding browser controls take more effort than standard Android.

02Battery-value pick

Lenovo Tab M8 Gen 4

PRICE CHECKUsually $99–$119DISPLAY8-inch Android displayBATTERYStrong full-day browsing results

Why it works

  • Standard Android browser behavior
  • Excellent battery results for its size
  • Small, light, and easy to wall mount

Know before you buy: It is an older budget model, so it is not especially fast. Confirm the listing says Gen 4 and is sold by Amazon or a retailer you trust.

03Newer compact Android

Lenovo Tab One 8.7

PRICE CHECK$124.99DISPLAY8.7-inch Android displayBATTERYWorkday-size 5,100 mAh battery

Why it works

  • Newer hardware than the Tab M8
  • 4GB RAM gives the browser more breathing room
  • Standard Android makes full-screen setup easier

Know before you buy: It has less long-term independent battery data than the older M8. Keep brightness moderate and test it unplugged before permanently mounting it.

04Best overall tablet

Samsung Galaxy Tab A9 8.7

PRICE CHECK$138.99DISPLAY8.7-inch Android displayBATTERYRoughly 12–14 hours in common tests

Why it works

  • The cleanest balance of speed, battery, and size
  • Samsung's mature Android software is easy to support
  • Strong choice for an office-wide standard

Know before you buy: It costs more than the Fire and Lenovo budget models, and availability can vary by region.

05Best larger display

Amazon Fire HD 10 (2023)

PRICE CHECK$139.99DISPLAY10.1-inch 1080p displayBATTERYUp to 13 hours claimed

Why it works

  • Much easier to read from across a room
  • 1080p screen gives the Presence layout more space
  • Good battery target for a full workday

Know before you buy: It shares the Fire OS setup limitations of the HD 8. The larger screen is more visible, but also needs a sturdier mount.

DEDICATED STATUS HARDWARE

When you want a signal, not another screen.

These are purpose-built accessories rather than full Presence displays. They react quickly and fit neatly on a desk or door, but they do not show the complete tablet layout.

BUSY Bar

A polished desk display for people who want Presence Focus to hand off to a dedicated timer and distraction-control system.

PRESENCE CONTROLS
Starts and stops your configured BUSY focus profile
  • Large LED matrix is easy to see across a room
  • Physical controls and focus timer live on the device
  • BUSY App can apply the distraction rules you choose

The honest limitation: It is not a full Presence screen. Presence starts the Focus handoff; BUSY App and hardware handle the session.

BusyTag

A smaller USB-connected signal for doors and desks when a simple, highly visible color is more useful than a full dashboard.

PRESENCE CONTROLS
Mirrors the final Presence status color on its LEDs
  • Compact enough for a door frame or crowded desk
  • Custom Presence colors can carry to the light
  • Receives only a color, not private calendar details

The honest limitation: The current cloud connection controls the LEDs, not rich artwork on the built-in screen.

HOW TRMNL STACKS UP

Less live. Much longer lasting.

TRMNL is not a tablet and does not run the live Presence browser view. It is a purpose-built e-ink display that refreshes a rendered status on a schedule.

What mattersAndroid or Fire tabletTRMNL
RefreshNear real time in the browserScheduled e-ink refresh
BatteryCharge about once a dayTypically measured in weeks
ScreenColor, brighter, animatedCalm, paper-like, monochrome
Best forCalls, live meetings, quick changesGlanceable status with minimal charging
TradeoffMore setup and daily powerStatus can lag between refreshes
Our honest take

Choose a tablet when a status change needs to appear quickly. Choose TRMNL when a calm display and exceptional battery life matter more than second-by-second updates. Presence supports both approaches.
